What is Qurbani and Uḍḥīyyah?
Qurbani, also known as Uḍḥīyyah, is the act of sacrificing an animal during Eid al-Adha to commemorate Prophet Ibrahim’s (peace be upon him) willingness to sacrifice his son for Allah. The meat is distributed between friends, family, and those in need.
Who is obligated to perform Qurbani?
Qurbani is wājib (compulsory) for every sane, adult Muslim who meets the Niṣāb threshold (minimum wealth level).
What is the niṣāb threshold for Uḍḥīyyah to become wājib?
Uḍḥīyyah becomes wājib for anyone who owns wealth, in excess of their basic needs, equivalent to the value of 612.36 grams of silver, equivalent to the value of £496.54 (as of Friday 25th April). This is the same threshold used for ṣadaqat al-fiṭr.
Can I donate Qurbani on behalf of someone else?
Yes, you can perform Qurbani on behalf of a loved one, including deceased family members. Simply make the intention when donating.
How do you ensure the Qurbani process is Shariah-compliant?
All Qurbanis are overseen by qualified scholars and performed according to Islamic principles. We ensure the animals meet age and health requirements, and the sacrifice is carried out after Eid prayers.
How is the meat distributed?
We prioritise the most vulnerable, including refugees, widows, orphans, and families in remote or underserved areas. Distributions are done door-to-door, tent-to-tent, or at designated collection points.
Can I give more than one Uḍḥīyyah and Qurbani?
Yes, you can give multiple Qurbanis. Many donors choose to donate for themselves and their family members or as Sadaqah Jariyah for deceased loved ones.
Why do people perform Uḍḥīyyah on behalf of the Prophet ﷺ?
As narrated by Abū Dāwūd, Rasūlullah ﷺ slaughtered two rams—one on behalf of himself and his family, and the other on behalf of the ummah.
Additionally, it is reported that Rasūlullah ﷺ instructed ʿAlī (Allah be pleased with him) to perform Uḍḥīyyah on his behalf, which he continued to do after the Prophet ﷺ's passing.
