Providing a Lifeline: Humanity Without Borders’ Water Project in Yemen

For over seven years, Humanity Without Borders has been a steadfast presence in Yemen, a nation grappling with one of the world’s most devastating humanitarian crises.

Since 2019, our mission has focused on providing both immediate relief and long-term solutions, supporting the lives of vulnerable communities across Aden, Hadhramaut, Marib, Sana’a, and Taiz.

Among the most pressing challenges faced by Yemen’s population is access to clean drinking water.

Decades of conflict have severely damaged water infrastructure, leaving millions of families to struggle for this essential resource. Humanity Without Borders is working tirelessly to bridge this gap, bringing life-saving water to those in desperate need.

The Scale of the Water Crisis

Yemen’s water scarcity is a dire reality. Infrastructure destruction, overcrowding in urban areas, and displacement caused by years of conflict have left over 16 million people without access to clean water.

For many families, daily survival depends on dangerous journeys to fetch water, often from unsafe sources. Women and children bear the brunt of this burden, risking their health and safety as they walk miles each day for a basic necessity.

In the cities of Aden and Taiz, where displaced populations continue to rise, residents often resort to buying water at exorbitant prices. Even then, the water is not guaranteed to be clean or sufficient. Rural communities face even greater challenges, relying on damaged wells and polluted streams to meet their needs.

Humanity Without Borders’ Response

At Humanity Without Borders, we believe that water is life, and access to clean water is a fundamental human right. Our water project in Yemen aims to address this critical issue by providing:

  • Water Tanks Delivering 30,000 Litres: For just £180, each water tank delivers clean, safe drinking water to hundreds of people, transforming lives and restoring dignity.

  • Sustainable Solutions: We are committed to creating long-term impact by working with local communities to install reliable water systems and rehabilitate existing infrastructure.

  • Prioritising the Most Vulnerable: Our initiatives focus on the most affected groups, including women, children, and internally displaced persons, ensuring that no one is left behind.

Since the inception of our water projects, we have reached thousands of families, giving them hope in the midst of adversity.

Stories of Transformation

In Marib, one of Yemen’s fastest-growing cities due to an influx of displaced families, our water tanks have become lifelines. Residents who previously spent hours walking under the scorching sun to fetch water now have access to clean drinking water in their communities.

One local resident, Mohamed Salman, shared his experience:

“Before these water tanks arrived, I had to walk miles each day to fetch water for my children. Now, we can focus on living, rather than surviving. This has changed our lives.”

Beyond Water: A Comprehensive Approach

While clean water is at the core of our work, Humanity Without Borders is deeply committed to addressing Yemen’s broader challenges. Alongside our water projects, we have delivered:

  • Food parcels to families facing acute hunger.
  • Flour and baby milk powder to ensure essential nutrition.
  • Livelihood programs to empower communities and promote self-sufficiency.
  • Shelter and new homes to protect vulnerable families living in temporary accommodations and refugee camps.
