Zakāt on interest money

When I opened an account with my bank, without realising I opened a savings account which gives interest. Over the years, this has accumulated a large amount of money. As interest is not permissible, do I have to pay zakāt on that amount?

Answer:

Zakāt is not necessary on any interest accrued as zakāt is necessary only on lawful money which belongs to you. Any interest accrued in the bank account is not the money of the account holder.[1]
