Six Fasts of Shawwal

The blessings of Ramadan do not end with Eid; rather, they continue through the special opportunity of fasting six days in Shawwal. This voluntary fast is highly encouraged in Islam and serves as a powerful way to extend the spiritual benefits of Ramadan.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said:

“Whoever fasts the month of Ramadan and then follows it with six days of fasting in the month of Shawwal, it will be as if he has fasted for the entire year.”
(Muslim 1164)

Mufti Taqi Usmani, in his book Islamic Months, writes:

“This hadith has described the great reward of six fasts of this month. Therefore, the Muslims should take this opportunity of acquiring such an enormous reward from Allah. It is more preferable to start these fasts from the 2nd of Shawwal and keep fasting up to the 7th of it. However, if they are kept on other days, it is hoped that the requirement of the above hadith may also be fulfilled.”

Fasting these six days not only deepens faith and strengthens self-discipline but also multiplies rewards immensely. In this blog, we will explore the significance, virtues, and practical ways to incorporate the six days of Shawwal fasting into our lives.

A true sign that our Ramadan has been accepted is that Allah grants us tawfīq to continue worshipping Him beyond the blessed month. Thus, we should ensure that, even though Ramadan has ended, our daily Qur’ān recitation, dhikr, duʿā’, fasting, charity, and night prayer does not end—even if it is little.

Our beloved Prophet ﷺ said:

“The most beloved deeds to Allah are those which are constant, even if they are a little.” (Muslim)

One simple way to maintain the habit of giving charity is by setting up an automatic recurring donation for various noble causes. You can easily do this by clicking here.
